I WAKE UP early in a bed and a room that I built myself.

The Bookstore is an old school place—so I decided to add on an upstairs with a bedroom and bathroom. That’s where I sleep most nights when I don’t have business, and that’s where I slept last night after a crazy night of sex with the hottest woman I’ve ever been around.

No woman has ever felt the way she felt last night and, for a time, it took my mind off everything. But that time is over. I’m still calm and relaxed from that incredible session with Esme, but when I open my eyes this morning I’m right back to that other part of my brain hard at work. I stretch, meditate, wash up, and do some push ups. I like to get my body ready for what’s coming at me for the rest of the day, and today is a big one.

Agony, Onyx and Jimmy are all coming, but I’ve invited some others as well. I made a few phone calls during the day yesterday, trying to gather up the greatest men I know to come together for a proposal they might end up laughing at. I don’t know. But my back is against the wall, and sometimes when you’re in that position, throwing up a Hail Mary is the only move you’ve got left. This is certainly that. Jimmy’s coming today, and I want to run my ideas by him to see what he thinks before I voice my proposition to everyone else coming here tomorrow.

As I get dressed Esme wakes up. I love looking at her while she’s asleep. She really is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in my life, and as she opens her eyes I get to watch her wake for the second time. “What time is it?” she asks.

“Early enough that I wouldn’t judge you for sleeping in a little later. Jimmy’s on his way, I have business I need to attend to with him, alone.”

“Is that your way of telling me to take a hike?”

“Never,” I say. “It’s my way of telling you to stick around. I don’t want you out there on your own. No one knows we’re here right now, but I don’t put anything past the cartel. You’re safer here than out there. Agony and Onyx are down the road. I can see them coming from here.” I look out the window that I built with my own two hands. I picked this location as a potential clubhouse for a reason—there’s a long, straight dirt road that leads here, so I can see everyone coming. I see the boys coming and I feel better that they’re going to protect Esme, just in case.

“So what am I supposed to do to keep myself occupied while you’re having your meeting?”

“Don’t know. I have a whole store’s worth of books downstairs—I’m sure one of them can tickle your fancy.”

“That’s not what tickles my fancy.” She’s got the look—the same
